Manufacturer’s Review: John Hardy

John Hardy is inspired by Bali and its time-honored jewelry-making traditions.  As a Canadian artist, John Hardy established an artisan collective in 1975 dedicated to creating one-of-a-kind jewelry. Hi goal was to preserve the rich heritage of Bali. For over 40 years artisans have committed to making handcrafted jewelry with techniques passed down for generations. They use vetted suppliers to ensure both diamonds and gemstones conform to our high ethical standards, as well as reclaimed silver and gold. The passion for creating distinctive and meaningful jewelry is echoed by their dedication to building a sustainable future for the artisan community.

They craft jewelry by hand, one piece at a time, through a unique 8-step process starting with a hand-sketched and watercolor design. In addition, followed by a wax carving and master casting of the piece. Finally ending with the hand-setting of each gemstone. They are known for bold designs and meticulous attention to details. This can be seen in their iconic Classic Chain bracelet, which takes one artisan four days to weave by hand.

Over the years, they have stayed true to the authentic jewelry-making techniques. For instance, Balinese royal courts— chain-weaving, hand-hammering precious metals, carving intricate back-grille scenes inspired by nature, and the textured jawan motif, traditionally found in the decoration of sacred objects. Each one-of-a-kind piece is imbued with meaning through powerful design and dramatic details.

John Hardy is committed to nurturing both community and artisans, with our Ubud Design Studio and Workshop serving as a central hub. They support artisans—women, men, and whole families—through our “Jobs For Life” program. In other words, the program ensures the unique jewelry making tradition is passed on for generations and apprentices will one day become masters. John Hardy is dedicated to sustainable luxury business practices. They strive to use 100% reclaimed Silver and Gold in the creation of their jewelry. The Diamonds are sourced strictly following the United Nations resolution and the Kimberley Process. The Gemstones and other Natural Materials are sourced following John Hardy’s Ethical Sourcing Code of Conduct. They are committed to the work of preserving the natural landscape of Bali.
